This study explores the interaction between technological advancement and professional identity among Italian knowledge workers in SMEs environemt ussually aged 45-60, based on data from a cultural association dedicated to professional development. The analysis shows that technological adaptation for these professionals is not just a technical challenge but a personal journey intertwined with the reconstruction of their professional identities. Key findings include: 76% of respondents are actively pursuing technological up-skilling, driven not only by competency acquisition but also by aspirations to maintain professional relevance and social capital. Emotional intelligence and cross-cultural competencies are crucial in shaping positive attitudes towards technology adoption. Professionals favour a collective learning approach, leveraging peer networks and collaborative environments rather than focusing solely on individual skills. The study highlights the importance of social and cultural factors in technological adoption and suggests that effective strategies for mature professionals should integrate both technical skill development and the continuity of professional identity.
